Mike Tonucci
Licensed Professional Counselor Associate
I am a Licensed Professional Counselor Associate and Board Certified Behavior Analyst with over 20 years of experience supporting children, adolescents, and families across school, home, and clinical settings. I specialize in working with complex cases, particularly when families or clients feel “stuck” or have not experienced meaningful progress through traditional outpatient therapy alone.
I typically work with children, teens, and young adults ages 7–21, with a particular focus on anxiety and its related presentations, including panic, phobias, social anxiety, school avoidance/refusal, and OCD. I also have extensive experience supporting families navigating disruptive or noncompliant behavior, emotional regulation challenges, and neurodevelopmental differences such as ADHD and autism.
My approach is grounded in a parent-centered, skill-based model that integrates behavioral principles with psychotherapy. I believe that lasting change happens not just in the therapy room, but in the moments that matter most at home, at school, and in everyday life. Parents are viewed as essential partners in the therapeutic process, and much of the work focuses on helping caregivers answer the real-world question: “What should I be doing when my child says or does this?”
In addition to working directly with clients, I place strong emphasis on parent coaching, family support, and systems-level collaboration. I regularly support families experiencing significant stress or strain related to a child’s mental health needs, including the impact on sibling relationships and the parental or marital relationship itself. Therapy is designed to support the entire family system, not just the identified client.
My clinical style is informed by third-wave behavioral therapies, including Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), mindfulness-based approaches, and applied behavior analytic principles. Treatment is structured, collaborative, and practical, with a strong emphasis on building flexibility, emotional awareness, and effective behavioral skills. Progress is monitored thoughtfully, with the goal of ensuring skills generalize beyond sessions and into real-world settings.
Above all, I strive to provide a supportive, respectful, and nonjudgmental space where clients and families can better understand patterns, clarify values, and take meaningful steps toward sustainable change
